Mount Everest : Into the Death Zone - the fifth estate

It was May 19, 2012 and a young and determined Canadian was proudly standing on top of the world after an agonizingly slow climb up Mount Everest. Shriya Shah-Klorfine had reached the summit. But in the hours that followed, things would go dreadfully wrong and she would perish, like hundreds before her, high up in Everest's "Death Zone."
Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent of Everest almost 60 years ago, it has been an irresistible fascination for aspiring mountaineers. Hundreds make the attempt every year, and many don't make it. This year was no exception as hundreds made their way to the summit even as worrying signs pointed to trouble. Among them was Shriya Shah-Klorfine, the cheerful and energetic Torontonian. She had never climbed a mountain before, and despite warnings from her friends, husband, and seasoned Everest sherpas, she was climbing the world's highest peak, determined to succeed.
In this 2012 documentary, Bob McKeown travels to Nepal and pieces together what happened with exclusive never-before-seen video of Shah-Klorfine's final hours on Everest. the fifth estate uncovers startling information about her deadly climb into the icy oxygen-thin expanse of Everest known as the Death Zone.

People have a will to live, to explore, to conquer, to accomplish against all odds. They will not be hindered in any manner, way, shape, or form! She probably thought "WHAT A WAY TO GO!"

Why do people climb Everest? Who already has an enormous ego does not need to ... she had a dream and she pursued her dream ... yes she could have been better prepared and should have invested the time she invested in getting her poster done in familiarising with the equipment ... especially how to deal with oxygen ... the expedition provider failed big time ... usually they want to know climbing cv and experience ... if someone is on an excellent training level climbing skills are actually secondary ... therefore a lot of provider assess climbers during acclimatisation ... if they are too poorly they do not go up ... the money is gone anyway ... she does not seem to have been to bad, she made it up there ... and with less waiting and sufficient oxygen most likely back down ... at some point she made the decision to put the summit before her life ... yes she should have respected the advice of the Sherpas ... and should have know where it leads to ... death ... there were plenty of examples ... the docu was stupid ... ‘even downwards she struggled’ ... showing a picture where some run down the mountain ... well, nobody moves like this on the actual mountain and going down safely is not that easy ...

Hard to feel any compassion, at all. She should've never been on that mountain and I'm sure she was fully aware of that. Her inexperience, arrogance and foolish pride endangered those around her as well. This documentary hailed her as a hero. In reality, she was a dangerous fool and lost her life because of it.

One of the Sherpas literally told her that she was going to die and she still went seriously. She must not have thought much about her family

Nobody forces them to climb the mountain. Also, Its the amount of money the people spend to climb Everest. Thats why she said " i spent money, im going up". Everyone says that "they can do it". Until they die on the Mountain⛰. There needs to be an experience level and age requirement met. They are not just risking there lives but the sherpas lives as well. Its selfish.

Why should the government of a Developing Nation be responsible for placing boundaries around this kind of arrogance and privilege?

A legacy? This is not new. People die because they don't listen to reason. Every single year. This is not a Nepal issue, the Sherpas get paid bumpkins for what they do.

Terribly sad, it's not her fault she died, the authorities should bear responsibility if it's a death from lack of oxygen. We have cables going across the Atlantic Ocean, I can't se why oxygen can't be refilled via pipeline to near the summit at least or made available in some way. People shouldnt pay money to die because there was a q on the summit, thats just morally wrong, if they've turned it into a cash cow the provide safety too, may she rest in peace, she seemed like an amazing person, and she accomplished her ambition.

She was told multiple times not to do it. She’s not ready. She doesn’t have enough oxygen. As much as it is the company. She clearly had a stupid goal in mind and was literally going to die to achieve it.

Sheria was in the country, she was born and bred in, but she was carrying a Canadian 🇨🇦 flag? Why wasn’t she representing her country? That’s strange! Jolly well! 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂Cheers and 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺mates!Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Unfortunately, Sheria’s ambitious nature, and stubbornness got in her way. She should’ve taken heed, but I suppose she choose Mt. Everest dreams over her husband, family and friends. May her family finds peace, and the deceased eternal rest. This piece is troubling and sad on all counts. So, so sad. 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂Cheers and beers 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺mates!
